Everything you need to learn about stand-up paddle boarding yoga! 

Stand up paddle boarding yoga is a perfect way to take the yoga to a new stage and definitely is one of the big benefits. Paddle boarding is becoming more common and SUP yoga lessons start anywhere with water. You don’t have to be at the height of your fitness to use a paddle board – however more comfortable to need. 

It would be incredibly calming if you do a yoga exercise in the middle of a lake or in a peaceful part of the sea, so you do not get any sounds or interruptions from daily life. However, before you start, you must ensure that you are properly prepared.

For paddle boarding yoga, the most obvious thing you need is a paddle board. You don’t have to spend a lot on one to start up, because some places are going to contract them out. 

You would need a board that helps you to travel and stretch a lot, if you want to do SUP Yoga. The wider the frame, the longer it is secure, the wider at least 30 cm it is. The length will allow you plenty of space to stretch, and should be between 10.5 and 12 feet. 

Some boards are designed for yoga and are already fitted with a deck pad. If not, buy one before you go. This pad will cover most of your board length and has a slip-free surface. When the board gets wet, you just slip away if you try to do yoga without it. 

You have two choices for buying a paddleboard: epoxy or inflatable. 

SUP epoxy yoga

This board form is a solid board. It needs a roof rack or truck and a wide room to store it. It is also the most expensive SUP alternative. 

Inflatable Paddle Board yoga

It is the cheaper alternative and is popular with beginners. This can be stored in rucksacks or in the trunk of a car and offer more flexibility to use. They also work just as well as an epoxy SUP, and you can choose which SUP alternative. You need a pump to inflate if you have an inflatable SUP.

A paddle is also required to guide your SUP in the water. The right paddle size depends on your own height, but the right one should be purchased by a local sports store. 

If you are using your yoga board, it is a good idea to ensure that you have paddle hooks. These stick to the side of the board and keep the paddle unused. Without these you will have to place the paddle on your board during your preparation, and when you finish your paddle has been slipped over and gone. 


Yoga clothing must encourage you to move and stretch, so a wet suit won’t do. You have to pick something you can float in when you slip off the floor, so a bikini, speedos or shorts are the perfect option. Spandex sports gear is also an option, but it should avoid baggy pants. 

Your usual shoes on a paddle board won’t be fine, so take deck shoes or flip flops, as these will cope with wet conditions.

Yoga isn’t much equipment required, but somewhere you need to keep your phone, keys and shoes dry and comfortable, and you need a place to drink. Waterproof bags come in various shapes and sizes and are indispensable in a SUP. 

Choose your place

A good outing depends on many factors, the weather being the most important. If you try in windy conditions to do your yoga, you ‘re not going to get very far. Check the weather to make sure the weather is calm where you go. 

SUP yoga ‘s best weather is calm or warm. 

You have to choose where and when to do your yoga. If you go to a busy lake, the water will shift a lot and the balance will probably not be held proper. Similarly, surfing SUP Yoga won’t work very well. Recall that some stretches of water have currents which must also be taken into account. You will find your positions slightly changed as you change your posture to make up for the water movement but the optimal position will be found soon. You can start adding more positions from there, but be mindful that certain poses are not appropriate for a paddle board. 

The handle of the board is the safest place to concentrate when doing yoga and thus seek to maintain your centre of gravity as close to it as possible. It may also help select poses that have a low centre of gravity, such as downhill or uphill cat. 

You should keep your eyes on the horizon as one way to maintain your balance on a SUP. This focuses on your feet and looking up will also help you breathe. At first, you may feel quite extraordinary in standing up paddle board yoga, but there may be others around you and you can experience true relaxation with being on the waters. 

Many places offer lessons of SUP yoga. These are a good place to get you started as they teach you not only the fundamentals of balance, but also a few poses which are perfect for standing paddle boarding yoga.

Tips for supporting you: 

Keep small – you can concentrate on the wall. 

Keep the body equally spaced on either side over the middle of the handle. You’ll switch for your places, but try as much as you can to hold your body in the middle. 

If you can’t swim, don’t be scared off. SUP yoga can also be attempted on shallow water. 

If you’re new to boarding paddles, learn to paddle and balance before practising yoga. 

Don’t begin with your regular sequence of yoga. It must be balanced for a SUP. 

It takes a couple of minor changes to the usual yoga positions to practise SUP yoga. If you master them, you will enjoy the freedom to relax on the surface.
