Paddle Board Yoga Benefits

Paddle Board Yoga has many fantastic health benefits, similar to stand-up paddle boarding. SUP yoga strengthens our muscles and provides them with more flexibility and durability. Performing yoga in the middle of nature while listening to the beautiful songs of birds and enjoying gorgeous scenes help us to relieve our stress and feel like a calm body. SUP yoga also helps us to improve our breathing techniques and refines techniques on land. The most important benefit of performing SUP yoga is the practical improvement of balance. It is mostly practiced on calm bodies of water, such as lakes or bays. Moreover, yogis are improving their yoga skills because SUP yoga requires more strength, balance, and focus than performing on plane earth.

Which board do you need to perform SUP yoga on?

Before starting yoga on the water, the most important thing you need is the right paddle board. A strong and at least 15cm thick inflatable paddle board that can be easily stable on the water is highly recommended by professionals and experts. If you are a beginner, it will take a bit of time to get used to performing yoga on the water.

Choosing the right paddleboard will protect you from many difficulties that you may face in the beginning or performing difficult yoga poses. An unstable paddleboard will lower your morale to perform yoga on a paddle board.

There are a variety of yoga paddle boards available in the market which are specially designed to perform yoga and help you to stay stable on the water. Hence, it’s not mandatory to buy a special yoga paddleboard; if you have a regular paddleboard, you can also perform your yoga practices on it.

SUP yoga will look like an easy and fun task but just think for a time of headstand on a paddleboard in the middle of the ocean. Do you think it’s really easy? It will be challenging to maintain balance in the middle of the ocean.

Performing yoga on a Stand Up Paddleboard will be a tricky task, but it’s very beneficial as it provides energy to our muscles, full-body awareness, and builds core strength.

Moreover, SUP yoga will polish your yoga skills and allow you to perform them in a better way. So, without selecting the right paddleboard, it will not be easy for you to perform the yoga poses in the best way.

Check the weather

As a beginner and to enjoy a peaceful SUP yoga, it’s a necessary thing to check the weather and a sunny day is perfect for spending a fun day on the water.

Before going for SUP yoga, check out the weather conditions such as wind pressure or the incoming bad weather because it will become more difficult to balance paddle boards on the water if the heavy wind flows. So, always check the weather.

If you are living in an area where there often get afternoon thunderstorms, then it would be a better idea to get out on the water in the morning because you don’t want to be stuck in any kind of problems such as thunder or nearby lightning while your yoga practices on SUP.

Practice at a slow pace

Practicing yoga on a paddleboard is not as simple and easy to balance as it is on the ground. It’s not any typical vinyasa practice, so it’s important to slow down your yoga practice to maintain balance and to enjoy it for a long time without falling in the water. Check your position on the paddle board, hold your yoga poses, and use your breath to keep focused. As I mentioned earlier, SUP yoga will bring a new perspective to your yoga practices and can bring it a new shape. Everyone has their point of view about the perspective, such as some may think that SUP yoga reminded them to slow down.

Look you center

To perform yoga poses in the right way is to look at the center of the body as it makes your body to be stable and balanced. At your beginning of yoga practice, you have listened a lot about the center, but in SUP yoga, the term center broadened and spread from your body to paddleboard. Generally, the handle of the paddle board is its center point. So, to keep yourself balanced at the paddle board it would be better to keep your body center near to the handle or in the center of the paddle board. Staying at the center will help you to stay balanced while you move for yoga moves and poses.

As a beginner, you should always start with a nice wide board in calm and flat water. Selecting the size of around 11 inches in length is the best for beginners.

  • Stand next to the board and get the board in water so that the fin can’t hit bottom.
  • Hold the edges of the board and work your way in the kneeling position, just in the center of the board. You can locate the center of the board by finding the carry handle.
  • Keep your hands on the edges of the yoga board and move your one foot to place it where you have placed the knee.
  • When you stabilize yourself, start raising your chest and stand up after your chest is vertical to your legs.

How to hold SUP paddle?

It’s a common mistake at the beginning of learning Paddle Board Yoga that the beginners don’t hold SUP paddle correctly. There are basic mistakes that can be corrected easily. The following are some tips to avoid making mistakes while grabbing a paddle.

  • Keep the tear-dropped-shaped blade of the yoga paddle angle away from you and keep it towards the knows of the board.
  • When you are paddling on the right side of the board, keep your left hand on the T-grip and right hand on the few feet down, almost on the shaft. When you switch sides, don’t forget to reverse your hand positions.
