These Safety Tips Can Save Your Life

These Safety Tips Can Save Your Life

A lot of danger can be avoided if a surfer follows certain safety measures and is aware of certain dangers. Let us see some of the measures that can save your life.

1. Protect Your Head

When you fall from your board protect your head with your two arms. This will save the head from hitting the sea-floor, your surfboard or a fellow surfer. This small precaution can be of great help, especially for the beginners.

2. Hold On To Your Surfboard

Never let go of your surfboard even when you are trying to avoid an oncoming wave. Keep a strong hold on to the board. Otherwise, the board could go and hit someone from the back. It is also wise to not paddle directly behind other surfers.

3. Hold Your Surfboard To Your Side

This is a typical beginners’ mistake. Never hold your surfboard in front of you while holding ground against whitewater. It could hit your face. Always hold the surfboard to your side.

4. Know About Rip Currents

Rip currents are water flowing back to the sea between sandbars where the waves are breaking. This is likely to drag unaware surfers to the sea. If caught in a rip current, you should not panic. You should not paddle against the current. You should paddle perpendicular to the current and away from it.

5. Know Surf Etiquette

You should know the surf etiquette before going into the sea. You should not surf when the beach is intensely crowded. If you are a beginner, it is better to avoid the places where the experienced surfers are surfing. You should always wait for your chance to take the wave. Following the etiquettes can be safe for you and your fellow surfers.

6. Be Fit To Surf

Being normally fit is not enough. It is not going to help you if you are fit enough to run a marathon or can do an insane amount of bench presses. Your paddling muscles should be strong. They are the ones that matter when surfing.

7. Avoid Obstacles

You should never surf near any obstacles. Whether they are piers, rocks, groynes, cliffs or boats, they are all dangerous to be near when surfing. Any kind of permanent structure is likely to have strong currents around it. Even if good waves are breaking close to these obstacles you should look for some other place to surf.
